MEET ABBIE

volunteer

Abbie Hlavacek is a wife and a mother of three children attending the Marana Unified elementary schools. I am also a woman in STEM, a person with a disability, and a small business owner.

She is running for Marana Unified School Board to ensure that all children have access to the best education possible. She wants to be a voice for those that are less heard. She is committed to ensuring that all students have access to their education and the best education possible.

Abbie has 10+ years of experience in the software development industry and has since been involved in many facets of the software world. She currently develops projects for the healthcare industry focusing on AI voiced-based development and other challenging and enjoyable work. Her unique skill set would serve the Marana Unified school board well as schools navigate the fast pace of the ever-changing technological landscape.

Why Marana?

Abbie has three children, all attending a Marana Unified elementary school, and one of her children has special needs. Abbie and her husband were disappointed with the charter school experience for her child, so they turned to their public school district of Marana Unified, where she was met with compassion and listening. She has been a vocal advocate for them ever since, serving on the PTO, volunteering at the elementary school, and advocating on their behalf for improvements in the community.

Community Ties

Abbie moved from New Jersey, has been a Tucson resident, and has been a community member for over 12 years. She has mentored countless people getting a cochlear implant, including veterans, and is a soup kitchen volunteer. She cares deeply about her community and believes every student deserves a safe, inclusive, affirming, supportive environment where they can learn without fear, bullying, or interruption.

Representation Matters

As a person with a disability all her life, she believes all populations should be represented in our schools. Some schools in the district have as many as 34% of its student receiving accommodations. She advocates for equity, equal opportunities, and representation in our community and schools, especially at our governing board level.
